Release Note：

Imagine if Timbaland were kidnapped and held hostage in a council flat in Tottenham. Imagine then, that elite robot agents aligned to the New World Order were sent into rescue him with laser cannons little knowing that the kidnappers were in fact an underground cell of benefit-cheat Jedi. Imagine hip hop recapturing the sheer brutality of classic-era Public Enemy without it becoming a retread. Imagine if “urban” music was made not for the charts but the heart. Imagine “Two Fingers”.

Two Fingers are Brazilian beat-adventurer Amon Tobin and Joe “Doubleclick” Chapman. The pair met when Tobin lived in Brighton and bonded over an interest in music that ran way beyond the boundaries of “electronica”. In Montreal they applied production techniques associated with UK styles like drum & bass to the template of hip hop. It was an experiment with explosive results. MOBO-winner Sway (now signed to Akon’s Konvict label in the US) heard what was brewing he was so taken with it, he flew straight out to Montreal and recorded seven tracks with them, showing a harsher, more serious side to his personality whilst offering wry social commentary on everything from the way young Black men are treated (”What You Know”) to crazy girls who do too many pills (”That Girl”). The remaining rhythms were voiced by sometime Missy protégé Ms Jade and dancehall legend Ce’Cile. A couple of instrumental rhythms were added and this, first stage of a continuing project, was complete.

“Two Fingers” is a project unlike anything that any of the three main players has ever made before, a unique, utterly uncompromising, brutal and beautiful record that could only have grown out of the UK and the internationalism of those involved. If it’s not hip hop as we know it, then nor is it drum & bass or grime. Like all the best music it transcends genre to stand on its own icy, transcendent, brilliant.

Soon to be released on ATP Recordings Street Horrrsing is a perfect showcase of why Fuck Buttons are one of the most exciting noise bands around right now. Few bands of this style manage to sound as lush and beautiful as FB do here, highly recommended.

One should not be surprised at the powerful grinding sounds of a band called Fuck Buttons, nor should one be quite taken aback when Casiotone For The Painfully Alone sounds a wee bit emotional.

But Deerhunter are more subdued than their name suggests. For example, instead of enjoying the great outdoors, the narrator of Agoraphobia would rather spend his time in a prison cell. When you make it to the penultimate track, Neither Of Us, Uncertainly, you’ll realise that the song’s title aptly captures the spirit of Microcastle: Deerhunter are not, as their name suggest, epic warriors on the killing fields, rather they are young meek people, awkwardly shuffling past, trying to grasp at some bit of truth before it slowly, inevitably floats away.

After a few listens, Microcastle might take hold in your mind as an indie concerto. Broken into thirds, the album draws you in with some light pop fare before spilling its guts to you in a slow, dramatic middle section. But just when it seems the dark will only get darker, Nothing Ever Happened kicks in with a throbbing beat and pushes you through the last energetic stretch of the album.

But back to the beginning – although Agoraphobia sounds depressing on paper, it turns out to be quite buoyant in the hands of Deerhunter. The upbeat song introduces the album proper after the introductory instrumental, Cover Me (Slowly), grinds to a halt, and it is this sort of tug and pull construction that gives Microcastle some lasting power. Not convinced yet? Later on, the title track sloshes by with singer Bradford Cox barely able to push the words out in time, but just when you think you’re safe in feeling gloomy, the drums come in and nail it into your skull: suffer through it and everything will come out fine.

Deerhunter’s power doesn’t lie in their ability to create fast and slow songs and to put them next to each other in succession. Dynamic flourishes are one of the hardest things to pull off as a band without making it sound cheesy, and Deerhunter are able to give life to each of their crescendos, to give inspiration to each of their fading notes.

The sounds on Microcastle form a lush landscape. Ethereal voices blend into battered guitars and a determined rhythm section. Tagged as an experimental rock group, that abysmal chasm of classifications, Deerhunter lean more towards the ear-to-ear panorama of My Bloody Valentine than the warbled squawks of Lightning Bolt or the intense jabs of Deerhoof. Deerhunter, however, manage to steal a portion of each of those groups, using them to cook up a new recipe of indie experimental delight.

Press Release
1893. Chicago. The World’s Fair to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America opens. In the entourage of one Nikola Tesla, the renogade pioneer of modern electricity, travels Alfred Darlington, a young inventor from Los Angeles.

On only the second day of the fair, Darlington is electrocuted in a terrible accident, pronounced dead and taken to the morgue. Two days later, an attendent there hears knocking from one of the drawers where the corpses are kept. Armed with a shotgun and whisky he opens the drawer to find the young Alfred not only alive and well but babbling about a future worlds he has visited and asking that everyone now calls him “DAEDELUS”.
Tesla, both relieved that the boy has survived and embarrassed by the accident, allows him the run of his workshops. Over the next six months of the Fair, he devotes his time to building strange electronic instruments and on the very last night of the Fair presents the Love To Make Music To Symphony, which, he claims, is the sound he heard in the future.
The events of the performance are shrouded in secrecy – widely believed to be a result of a cover-up by government and the vested commercial interests who had most to gain from the Fair’s success. The few reports which have filtered out say that people go mad as they listen to the strange, alien sounds the young composer describes as “music”, that they scream, laugh, pull off their clothes, have sex with each other and themselves, fall into reveries and shout of “the hills, the beautiful hills”. Daedelus himself is dragged from the stage and detained indefinitely in a mental hospital in Chicago and stays there until his mysterious disappearance on May 29th 1913, incidentally the night of the riots in Paris at the first performance of Stravinsky’s Rites of Spring.
But for another twist the story would have ended there. However, Dr John Thompsock of the Chicago Ultra-Arts & Science-head Institute and one of the greatest living Tesla-ologists is lucky enough to obtain a cache of Tesla’s papers from a shadowy Eastern European in 1999. In amongst them he finds a cylinder disk. On playing it, he discovers that it contains the only recording made of Daedelus’ first and last performance.
Digitized and cleaned of crackle, pops, and shorn of 45 minutes of detuned primitive oscillator noise, this is the performance which you are holding now. Or listening to. Almost as strange as the day it was first performed and as liable to bring on what we can only decribe as “sexual fever”. To ease you through – and hopefully hold the fever at bay – this version features commentary from a number of leading scientists including Om’mas Keith and Taz of the Sa-Ra Foundation, plus (Dr) Michael Johnson, (Prof) N’fa, Paperboy (Mphil), (Dr) Erika Rose and (Prof) Laura Darling (of the Long Lost Institute). Of more than academic interest, this should still appeal to all aficionado’s of Very Very Late Victorian Music.
