Kid Koala：应该说是爵士乐吧。我刚才也说了，我播放音乐的风格是用4部黑胶唱盘发出几种不同的声音，通过声音的碰撞导致即兴的效果。我像使用乐器一样地在使用它们。唱盘（Turntable）是一个神奇的乐器，如果很好地配合混音器（Mixer）的效果，它绝对不只是一个让你播放音乐的载体，你能够使用它创造出无限的可能，甚至可以做到低音从一张唱片上发声，小号从另一张，主旋律还可以通过Scratch（刮）第三张唱片来获得音效。我到现在还没有完全找到充分发挥它作用的所有空间呢。

城市画报：感觉你刮盘技巧像是Hip Hop DJ的使用方法，但是播放出来的音乐却不仅仅是Hip Hop，真的很有趣。那你是从何时开始接触唱盘的？

　　Kid Koala：在念大学的时候。我开始喜欢Mr.Mix和Coldcut，他们富有创意的刮盘技巧让我从D.M.C.系统（DJ Mix Club）里脱离出来去到了另外一个空间。于是我在家里的Hi-Fi上开始练习，那时候买不起专业唱盘。就这样一直练了一年半终于买到了自己的Technics 1200唱盘。有趣的是，那时也没有什么专业的唱片来刮，于是就用了一些儿歌唱片，可能在那个时候我就已跳出了播放Hip Hop的框框了吧。（微笑）

城市画报：有一个名词叫“Turntablist”（唱盘主义），很多人都使用这个名词取代了传统的DJ，你是怎么看的？

Kid Koala：其实无所谓。关键是你要给大家什么声音。我还有一个乐队叫Bullfrog（牛蛙），玩一些和我自己的作品不同的甚至有点流行的音乐，在那里我就纯粹只是创造有节奏刮盘的声音而已。在Ninja Tune的大家庭里，基本上每个DJ都是很不一样的。所以唱盘对于一个创作型的音乐人来说是使用另外一种途径来表达自己吧，那就应该把它的功能发挥到极致。从这个角度来说，你可以叫我“Turntablist”。我会用Louis Armstrong歌曲里的小号部分使用不同的声段来刮到Bjork的唱片里，带来爵士效果；我还可以把Felix De Housecat的电子音效注入到Tears For Fears的歌曲“Shout”里面等等。感觉现场演出就是在做创作本身一样，很好玩的（大笑）。

城市画报：谈谈你的音乐吧。你的“Emperors Main Course in Cantonese”（皇帝的正餐广东话版）基本上被全世界所有著名的Chill Out/Lounge唱片收录在内，你在Ninja Tune旗下也推出了很多唱片，你是如何被Jon More（Ninja的老板，也是Coldcut的成员）发现的？

Kid Koala：当我在蒙特利尔的麦吉尔大学学习幼儿早期教育的时候，我开始把在我姐姐Hi-Fi上练习出来的刮唱片技巧运用到我兼职工作的俱乐部里。1995年，当Jon来我工作的俱乐部演出时，我给了他一卷混音卡带，它叫做“Scratchcratchratchatch”。不久之后，我就用了Kid Koala这个名字签约到了Ninja Tune旗下，成为他们在北美洲的首个艺人。之后，我的第一张唱片“Carpal Tunnel Sysdrome”配合一本32页的手绘漫画书出版了。因为得到了很多人的认可，我被邀请参加了著名的Money Mark乐队，并作了整个Beastie Boys《Hello Nasty》专辑巡回演出的暖场嘉宾。

城市画报：看过你350页长的漫画书《Nufonia Must Fall》，哀伤的感觉和你的个性不是太符合。听说你宣传这本带CD的书时的演出也很有趣，是吗？

Kid Koala：这是我最喜欢的漫画书。是ECW出版的唯一一本音乐配故事出版物。讲一个废弃的机器人爱上了一个年轻女工作狂的故事，是一个浪漫的悲剧。可能是我的个性的确比较快乐，而我的音乐作品总的来说还是偏Hip Hop，很难表达太悲伤的东西，所以我想在绘画上试试。于是，在CD里我只是大量使用了我从小就练习的钢琴来演绎，简单但似乎是在找回自我。演出时我并弹奏电钢琴配合唱盘一起玩，同时播放幻灯片，而所有场地中的观众是坐着看演出的，这是我终生难忘的经历。

城市画报：谈谈蒙特利尔吧。

Kid Koala：安静，很国际化，城市很大，是魁北克省的首府。法语英语通行。我喜欢那里的俱乐部，食物，唱片店，每年有世界知名的电子音乐节Mutek。冬天有点太冷了，而且很长。华人也不少，但我不太和他们打交道。

城市画报：如何看待科技的发展对音乐的影响。

Kid Koala：我本身不是特别关心高科技的东西。但是任何有助于推动进步的事物我都愿意尝试。还是喜欢使用唱盘来做现场演出，到现在我没有发现任何数码产品可以取代它。

城市画报：之前做过电台吗？感觉你在现场经常会停下音乐讲一些很幽默的笑话，当然也有介绍你的作品。这和很多DJ很不一样，像在唱独角戏，不过很有趣。

Kid Koala：我喜欢大家很开心地享受整个音乐旅程，而且我觉得这可以很互动地了解观众是否喜爱你播放的音乐。当我提问题的时候，我可以应大家的要求改变我的音乐风格。刚才就是有人说想听爵士，我就放了很多爵士。我喜欢愉悦大家，人生多美好啊，没必要DJ总是端着架子演出。而且这是我的风格，整个晚上我放的音乐不是百分之百让人跳舞的，那我更应该插科打诨一下才对。（笑）
